| Cultural semiotics deals with the encounter between cultures. Notions such as Ego-Culture, Extra-Culture and Non-Culture are essential in inquiries that aim at unveiling the self-image, or model, that a specific culture makes of itself in the encounter with another. The basic assumption is, thus, that a self-image of the Ego-Culture only emerges in the meeting with the Other. A parallel of this is to be found also on an individual level, then represented by personal pronouns within language. On an axis of conversation an "I" (Ego-Culture) speaks to a "Thou"(Extra-Culture) about a third person (Non-Culture) on the axis of reference. The non-person / non-Culture can mostly only be spoken about. My PhD-project aims at confronting existing models within cultural semiotics with empirical data in order to develop new ones. For semiotical theoretical purposes, but on a second level also for reasons of historical writing, I have chosen to study Germaine de Staël's rich autobiographical travel accounts written in the beginning of the 19th century. |
