Founded at an impromptu meeting of Nordic semioticians in Imatra, Finland, in 1987, the Nordic Association for Semiotic Studies (NASS) by now has managed to organize six important and highly successful congresses, in Odense, Denmark, in 1990, in Lund, Sweden, in 1992, in Trondheim, Norway, in 1994, in Imatra, Finland, in 1996, in Oslo, Norway, in 1998, and in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 2000. An Internordic Symposium also took place in Imatra in 1990, and week-long Nordic Research Courses were organized in Lund, in July 1992, in Trondheim, in October 1994, in Imatra in June 1996, and in Oslo in June 1998, all with the support of the Nordic Research Academy. The most recent congress of NASS was held in November 23 to 25, 2000, NASS, in Copenhagen, Denmark (see the official site or its mirror). The next course (the 5th) and congress (the 7th) is expected to take place in Umeå, Sweden, during the summer of 2002.

In spite of the important pioneering contributions of such scholars as Hjelmslev, Brøndal, and Malmberg, and the continuous effort of a generation of, mainly, Danish semioticians, semiotics for a long time seem unable to convince Nordic scientific communities of its value and relevance. There are now, however, semiotic associations in several Nordic countries, in Finland since 1979, in Norway since 1985 (now dormant), in Iceland since 1990, and in Sweden since 1991. There is an International Semiotics Institute in Imatra, Finland, an Institute of Literature and Semiotics in Odense, Denmark, a Seminar of General Semiotics in Aarhus, Denmark, and a Department of Semiotics, in Lund, Sweden.

Because of the small scale of Nordic countries, and in particular their scientific communities, and because of the tradition of collaboration between these countries, most organizational work in semiotics has taken place at the common Nordic level, as testified by the above-mentioned congresses and research courses. NASS also manages a Nordic Network of Semiotics, financed by the Nordic Research Academy.
