How to join the IASS-AIS?

The IASS-AIS is open to everybody who is working in the field of semiotics or who is interested in sign theoretic problems.

The annual fee for individual membership amounts to US$ 25.00 or 25. Members are also entitled to highly reduced subscription rates for S – European Journal for Semiotic Studies (published by the Institute for Socio-Semiotic Studies ISSS). To receive the reduced rate, orders have to be placed directly with the publishers.

To join the IASS-AIS, please copy&paste/print out the membership form (see below) and send the filled out form together with your payment to the Treasurer in charge of your country (a check or money order, payable to the IASS-AIS).

The IASS-AIS offers also the possibility of collective membership on different levels (from international associations to small circles or research groups). For details please contact the Secretary General (or see below):

The Vice-treasurer is in charge of the 2 Americas, the Treasurer for the "rest" of the world.

Everybody can copy the form sheet for registration as IASS meber and send it either electronically or materially to the Treasurer in charge of him/her as well as to the Secretary General.

There exist the possibilities of

1) Individual Membership
which concerns
a) persons, as well as
b) bigger institutions (international, transnational, and national semiotic and semiotics-related associations), and
c) smaller institutions (regional semiotic associations, university institutes, research centers, extra-university institutes, libraries, etc.)

The yearly Membership Fee for a) is US$ 25
The yearly Membership Fee for b) is US$ 80
The yearly Membership Fee for c) is US$ 40

International and transnational associations are of 3 types:
a) international special interest associations in semiotics such as the Internat. Association for Visual Semiotics;
b) international semiotics-related associations such as the International Symmetry Association;
c) transnational semiotic associations such as the Federacion Latino-Americana de Semiotica or the East-Asian Association for Semiotic Studies.

With a) and b) it is also possible to arrange mutual institutional membershup without exchange of money.

2) Collective Membership
Collective Membership means, that a national semiotic association can be (come) an Institutional Member of the IASS including ALL individual (paying!) Members of the respective national association, on the proviso that the Treasurer(s) of the national association collect the membership fees and forward them in one transmission procedure to the Treasurer(s) of the IASS, including a list of the paying members. In this case, which is meant to reduce the administrative work of the IASS officers, the fee of the national association is not US$ 80 sum total but US$ 12,50 (= 50 per cent of the regular fee for persons) for each individual paying member of the national association. These members of the national associations have the same rights and duties as the individual members of the IASS, including of course the right of voting and being elected in the IASS Gen. Assembly.

Such am arrangement exists with the following national associations:
Austrian Association for Semiotics
German Association for Semiotic
Czech Semiotic Circle
Associazione Italiana di Studi Semiotici
Association Française de Sémiotique
Hellenic Semiotic Society
Semiotic Society of America
(perhaps no complete list)

Please copy the form sheet for registration as IASS meber and send it either electronically or materially to the Treasurer in charge of him/her as well as to the Secretary General.
